Earl Eugene Schmidt was born in Clinton, Clinton County, Iowa. He was the son of Johannes J. Schmidt and Mary S. Jackson Schmidt.

At the time of his death, Earl was serving in the 56th Field Artillery Battalion, 8th Infantry Division, as a First Lieutenant and Observer on the Piper L-4 #43-29658.

On August 9, 1944, during a mission to drop plasma pouches to ground troops, his plane crashed near Pleurtuit, France. The airplane was probably shot down by flak and possibly collided with Piper L-4 #43-30014. 1Lt Schmidt is now buried in the Oakland Cemetery, Clinton, Clinton County, Iowa, USA.
