Gordon Elton Fanders was born on August 3, 1919, in Diller, Nebraska. He was the son of Dedrick V. Fanders and Malissa J. Fanders.
Gordon served in the 56th Field Artillery Battalion, 8th Infantry Division, as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot on the Piper L-4 #43-30014 during World War II.
On August 9, 1944, during a mission to drop plasma pouches to ground troops, his plane crashed near Pleurtuit, France. The airplane was shot down by flak and possibly collided with Piper L-4 #43-29658. 2Lt Fanders is now buried in the Prairie Home Cemetery, Diller, Jefferson County, Nebraska, USA.
