Joe William Green was born at McIntosh in Corson County on August 8, 1925, to Irvin and Sybilla Green. He had a brother, Erwin Green; his father died at McIntosh in 1927. Joe went to McIntosh High School from 1939 until the age of 18 in 1943, which was when he was drafted. As a teenager, Joe worked at the M.C. Crane Ranch, north of Glencross.

Joe was drafted into the Army on December 3, 1943, at Ft. Snelling, Minnesota. He was sent overseas to Europe in the early fall of 1944. He was Killed in Action on December 28, 1944, in Sadzot, Belgium, and is now buried in the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, Hombourg, Belgium. His name is commemorated on a plaque located in the Manhay History 44 Museum, Manhay, Belgium, but he is listed under December 29 casualties.
