Carmen Hayes was born on September 17, 1923, in Alabama. He was the son of Hushel Carman Hayes and Amelia Crow Hayes.

Carmen served in the 289th Infantry Regiment, 75th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was Killed in Action on December 28, 1944, in Sadzot, Belgium, and is now buried in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Haleyville, Winston County, Alabama, USA. His name is commemorated on a plaque located in the Manhay History 44 Museum, Manhay, Belgium, but he is listed under December 29 casualties.
