Ray C. Highsmith was born on May 16, 1916, in Kansas. He was the son of Oscar Conrad Highsmith and Minnie E. Bowser Highsmith.

Ray served in the 289th Infantry Regiment, 75th Infantry Division, as a Staff Sergeant during World War II. He was Killed in Action on December 28, 1944, in Sadzot, Belgium, and is now buried in the Grace Lawn Cemetery, Howard, Elk County, Kansas, USA. His name is commemorated on a plaque located in the Manhay History 44 Museum, Manhay, Belgium, but he is listed under December 29 casualties.
