Born on January 7, 1949, in Guelph, Canada, Calvin was the son of William I Nesbitt, who had predeceased his son, and Mary E. Nesbitt, brother of Farrell Nesbitt of Guelph, Ontario. On June 21, 1967, Calvin enlisted in the US Marine Corps in Buffalo, NY, arriving in MCRD Parris Island, SC, for Recruit training.

Upon completion of his training in the US, Calvin received orders for Vietnam and arrived in Da Nang on November 30, 1967, where was assigned for duty with Company D, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, 3d MAR DIV (Rein) FMF.

On April 26, elements of Company D were dispatched as a reaction force to assist Company A, which was in heavy contact with NVA forces west of Con Thien in Quang Tri Province. After a heavy engagement with the enemy in fortified positions, the Marines cleared the area and were able to recover their casualties. One of the men who was killed during the engagement was PFC Nesbitt, he died as a result of a hostile gunshot wound to his body.
