Born on September 25, 1945, in Fort McMurray, Canada, Gordon was the son of Henry White and Evelyn White of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 6, 1968, in Butte, MT. Arriving in Vietnam on October 15, he was assigned for duty with Company G, BLT (Battalion Landing Team) 2/26 9th MAB FMFPAC.

As part of the SLF (Special Landing Force), his unit participated in several Operations in the I Corps in the Northern provinces of South Vietnam.

On March 12, during Operation EAGLE PURSUIT II, Company G was conducting an in-search and destroy mission on Go Noi Island in Quang Nam Province, a known stronghold of VC and NVA forces for many years.

In the vicinity between Thanh My and Phu Dong in Dien Ban District, a Marine from Company G was wounded by hostile AK-47 fire, moving forward a short time, later a BT (Booby Trap) was tripped, causing it to detonate, wounding one Marine and causing the death of LCpl White as a result of multiple shrapnel wounds from the hostile device.
