Edward Gerald Sharpe was born on April 30, 1948, in Manitoba, Canada. He was the son of Gerald S. Sharpe and Marie L. Sharpe of Calhoun, TN.
Edward enlisted in the US Marine Corps on August 29, 1966, in Nashville, TN. He arrived in Vietnam on February 5, 1967, where he was assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
On April 25, Company D was under the OPCON (Operational Control) of the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines and a squad of Marines were on a patrol near the hamlet of Tan My in the Dien Ban District of Quang Nam Province when they were ambushed by the VC. A brief firefight ensued with the enemy fleeing after inflicting losses on the patrol. PFC Sharpe was killed in the action as a result of a gunshot wound and four of his comrades were wounded.
