Dennis Harold Wright was born on March 25, 1949, in Picton, Prince Edward County Municipality, Ontario, Canada. He was the son of Frederick H. Wright and Florence A. Wright of San Jose California.

Dennis enlisted in the US Marine Corps on September 12, 1968, in Oakland. PFC Wright arrived in Vietnam on March 17, 1969, where he was assigned to Company L, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

Company L was attached to the 2d Battalion during a search and clear operation in the Arizona Territory when the 2nd and 3rd platoons ran into a heavily entrenched enemy force in the Phu Long Village Complex. Breaking through the fortifications, the Marines suffered ten men killed and twelve wounded in action. Just north of the complex, the men once again encountered hostiles who may have fled the initial contact and hid in a tree line that erupted in a hail of small arms fire as the patrol approached resulting in the death of three Marines and wounding seven before the enemy was cleared from their positions. One of the casualties during the contact with the enemy was PFC Dennis Wright; he was killed in action as a result of hostile rifle fire.
