Wilbur Eugene “Billy” Skinner was born on November 5, 1931, in Genoa, DeKalb County, Illinois. He was the son of Wilbur Audiss Skinner and Margaret M Pratt Skinner. He graduated from Genoa High School in 1949 and later, in 1953, from the La Crosse State Teachers College in Wisconsin.
Cpt Skinner entered the US Marines Corps in 1953. On November 9, 1956, he married Joan Schwartz in Miami, Fla. They resided in Miami and Milton, Fla., until two years ago, when he was assigned to Beaufort. He was a member of the First Methodist Church in Genoa.
Cpt Skinner was a member of the 324 Marine Attack Squadron and was assigned to the Carrier Air Group Seven. He lost his life in France in an aircraft accident on August 18, 1963, during Operation Riptide IV. His aircraft belonged to VMA 324.
Captain Skinner is now buried in the Genoa Township Cemetery, Genoa, DeKalb County, Illinois, USA.
