Preston R. Chambliss of Dallas, Texas, served in the HQ Company, 374th Field Artillery Battalion, 100th Infantry Division, during World War II. He was thought to have died between October 20, 1944, and March 22, 194, but he was taken POW (Oflag 13B Hammelburg Bavaria 50-10).

Preston Ray Chambliss, known as "Fullback" and "Coach," passed away Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at his home in Kerrville. He was 85 years old. He was born in Dale, TX, on Dec. 2, 1918, and moved to Kerrville in 1920. He attended Kerrville schools and graduated from Tivy High School in 1937. He played on the 1936 Tivy High School team that went to the State of Texas Finals and became known as "Fullback." He received an athletic scholarship to Schreiner College where he graduated in 1939. He received a football scholarship to Southwest Texas State College. He was a member of the Kerr County National Guard when he was a senior at Southwest Texas State. The National Guard was mobilized in 1940, and he served five years in the Armed Forces. He served as forward artillery officer during which time his group was captured. He was a prisoner of war the last five months of the war in Germany, and after being released was awarded the Bronze Star and left the service as a 1st Lieutenant. Preston returned from the war to attend SMU in Dallas and received his BS in Health and PE in 1946. He returned to Kerrville as a junior high coach and coached football, basketball and track. He was shortly moved to Tivy High School to coach football. He became head coach of basketball, and head track coach. To many in Kerrville, he was known as "Coach" for decades. During the time he was coaching in the Kerrville Independent School District, he had many outstanding track and basketball teams, and coached athletes that went to State Finals. In 1950, Preston received a Business Administration Master's Degree from Sul Ross in Alpine and returned to be the Business Manager of Tivy High School. He also taught business courses during this time. He retired from teaching in 1978. Preston was a member of the Hill Country Retired Teachers, Hill Country Ex-POW Club and Trinity Baptist Church.
