He was killed in six days of bitter fighting in blinding rain and bitter cold when the 100th Division entered the line for the first time in the Vosges Mountains. Attacking SW out of the town of Baccarat their objective was to break the German entrenched positions along 1,200 to 1,500 foot high ridges covered by dense forest. By 18 Nov 44 they had outflanked the town of Raon l'Etape and broke the German winter lines in this sector which was intended by the Germans to hold out until April of 1945.
