Comments:

Louis Fred Green was born on July 25, 1922. He was the son of James O. Green and Julia Mae Blevins Green. Louis enlisted on October 7, 1941. He served in the 40th Engineer Combat Regiment during World War II. He was in a group of several soldiers who happened to drive down a road that had been cratered by the retreating Germans. The Germans had of course laid mines all around the crater, to prevent people on foot from bypassing it. These mines had killed several French civilians, including kids, whose bodies were lying in and around the crater. The soldiers decided to help remove the bodies from the crater by attaching ropes to them and pulling them out. Unfortunately, the second body caught on an anti-tank mine that blew up. These mines are very powerful, and three soldiers were killed, and several wounded. Louis Green was apparently wounded in the head by a fragment and killed on the spot. As they had been pulling on the bodies with ropes, the soldiers were quite far from the actual explosion so their bodies were not too damaged by the blast.
