George Arthur Wood was born on 1 December 1925 in Fredericton, York County, New Brunswick, Canada, as George Arthur Thompson, but his name was changed to Wood when he was adopted.

He had lived in Marion, Massachusetts, for 16 years. He attended High School for three years and left school at the age of 17. He had a summer job as an assistant at Lakeville Sanatorium and also as a laborer at A.W. Winters. In 1942, he worked at night as a truck helper at Canada Dry Giner Ale.

He resided with his other mother, Mrs. Norah Sears Ramsbotham, in Hartford, Connecticut, after his father had died. She had permitted George to enter the service of the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943. He enlisted in Montreal, Canada, with service number R273064, on 6 September 1943. He had been commissioned with the rank of Pilot Officer on 6 February 1945, his Officer's number J94668.

The aircraft took off from R.A.F. Station, Wickenby, at 19.09 hours on 7 February 1945 to bomb Kleve. The aircraft was hit by flak and crashed into the ground around 21.30 hours. His body was recovered on 7 February 1945 at Oss, and he was buried at the Catholic cemetery at Nistelrode in the Netherlands on 9 February 1945.

The crewmembers were F/Lt J.H. Somerville, F/O J.T. Collins, F/O H.J. MacMillan, Sgt J.L. Fryer, F/S D.H. Phillips, F/S G.A. Wood and F/S W.C. Wilson.
