Robert Orin Blackhall was born on April 15, 1920, in Vancouver, Canada. He was the son of William Percy Blackhall and Adelaide Elizabeth (nee Waterbury) McManus, and stepson of Robert McManus, of Bremerton, Washington.

He served in the 408 'Goose' Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Pilot Officer during World War II. Robert was the pilot on Halifax bomber JB898 that, on a mission to Dortmund, Germany, was shot down by a night-fighter and crashed near the village of Oldeboorn, Netherlands, killing 3 of the 8-man crew, including Pilot Officer Blackhall.

Robert was posthumously awarded the RCAF Operational Wings in recognition of his gallant service in action against the enemy.
