Marshall Edwin Balkam was born on January 19, 1921, in Baltimore, Baltimore City, Maryland. He was the son of Edward MacLellan and Gladys Ruth Sadler Balkam.
He graduated from Milltown Superior School, New Brunswick, and attended Mount Allison University before transferring to the University of Maine in the class of 1943.
Marshall enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force at Moncton, New Brunswick, on October 9, 1941. He attended various schools in Canada, graduating from No. 9 Air Observers School as an Air Navigator, and was commissioned on August 28, 1942.
Flight Officer Balkam served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. He was Killed in Action during a night attack in Hamburg, Germany, on August 3, 1943.
