Joseph Arthur Leo Couture was born on April 14, 1921, in Saint-Boniface, Greater Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He was the son of Arthur and Albina Couture, of Seattle, Washington.

Joseph enlisted in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on August 20, 1941. He served in the 578 (R.A.F.) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flight Lieutenant during World War II.

On July 21, 1944, his Halifax aircraft #MZ 617 went down during a night trip to Bottrop, Germany. Flight Lieutenant Couture was killed in this incident.
