Robert Russell Gourde was born on July 12, 1915, in Flaxville, Daniels County, Montana. He was the son of Arthur Joseph Gourde and Rosian Parent Gourde.

Robert served in the #419 Moose Squadron (Moosa Aswayita) of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flight Sergeant during World War II. He was declared Missing in Action on April 28, 1943, while laying mines in the Skaggerak Strait, Norway. His Halifax BII aircraft JB 929 VR-Q was shot down by night fighter pilot Lieutenant Werner Speidel of the 10/NJG 3. The bomber crashed at sea, 50 km northwest of Hjørring, Nordjylland, Denmark.
