Frederick Hansell Irwin was born on April 23, 1919, in Baltimore, Baltimore City, Maryland. He was the son of Leslie Henry Irwin and Zua Marie Honens Irwin.

Frederick served in the 425 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flying Officer during World War II. He was killed on March 19, 1945, when his Halifax III MZ482, which took off at 23h55 at RAF Tholthorpe, England, collided with Mosquito VI of the 515 Squadron. Both aircraft crashed near Ciney, Belgium.
