Walter Hopkins Webster was born on January 17, 1920, in Arlington, Massachusetts. He was the son of Walter F. Webster (deceased when Walter enlisted) and Dorothy L. (nee Hopkins) Webster, of Lexington, Massachusetts.

Walter served in the 419 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flight Sergeant during World War II. He was declared Missing in Action on May 17, 1942, when his Wellington aircraft # Z 1562, which took off at 23h09 from Midelhall, failed to return from an operational flight to lay mines north of the Frisian Islands.
