William Clarence “Billy” Caldwell was born on February 3, 1926, in Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Harry Willis Caldwell Sr. and Augusta Maria Bullerwell Caldwell.
Caldwell attended Weymouth High School and Trade School. He worked at Fore River Shipyard for a short time, but following his birthday, enlisted in the Marines. He served in Company E, 2nd Battalion, 22nd Marine Regiment, 1st Provisional Marine Brigade as a Private First Class during World War II. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 21, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
