Walter Lawrence Kemen was born on May 12, 1923, in Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota. He was the son of Peter Kemen and Ursula Anna Roggenbuck Kemen.
He served in Company B, 1st Battalion, 22nd Marine Regiment, 1st Provisional Marine Brigade as a Private First Class during World War II. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 24, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
