Elmer Del McArthur was born on April 10, 1925, in Los Angeles County, California. He was the son of Charles Culver McArthur and Hazel Pauline Knowlton McArthur.

He served in Company L, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as a Private First Class during World War II. During the afternoon of July 24, when they needed two mortar men to help on the line, Elmer was one who volunteered. That night, the Japanese attacked on that flank of heavy proportion where Elmer had been killed. He was Killed in Action on July 24, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
