Robert S. Spieth was born on July 20, 1923, in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Joseph Stewart Spieth and Margaret Ann Smith Spieth.

He served in the United States Naval Reserve as a Pharmacist's Mate Second Class during World War II. Disregarding his safety, Spieth went to aid his leader and administered first aid. While performing his duty, he was wounded by the enemy's small arms fire and died from his wounds received in battle on July 21, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
