James Benjamin Clardy Jr. was born on August 10, 1918, in Wrights, Greene County, Illinois. He was the son of James B. Clardy and Ruby R. Clardy. He was married to Alice Marie Hacke Clardy. He had an 11-month-old son namely Jerry Edward.

Clardy Attended Greenfield and Carlinville Schools and graduated from the C.C.H.S. in 1939. He was employed by Starr Brothers Creamery Rosentreter's Dairy and Wester Cartridge Company at East Alton, at the time of his induction, he was a fireman on the New York Central railroad.

He entered service on July 22, 1943, and received his training at New Orleans, Los Angeles, and Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He was sent to England in January and to France in July. He served in the 720th Quartermaster Railway Operating Battalion as a Technician Fifth Grade during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 9, 1944, one day after the liberation of Plouigneau.
