John D. Gemmill was born on December 9, 1916, in York County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Joseph Smith Gemmill and Alma Blanche Border Gemmill.
He served in the Headquarters Company, 25th Armored Engineer Battalion, 6th Armored Division, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 5, 1944, while delivering important documents to units of the division. He was given a Bronze Star award for heroic service in connection with military operations in France during the period 29 July 1944 to 5 August 1944. As a messenger, he displayed outstanding courage, devotion to duty, and complete disregard for personal safety in the face of heavy enemy fire. He was buried at Red Lion Cemetery, Red Lion, York County, Pennsylvania, USA.
