August Wilhelm Heinrich “Stub” Burmeister was born on June 15, 1893, in Heron Lake, Jackson County, Minnesota. He was the son of Carl Wilhelm Henry August "Charley" Burmeister and Emilie Wilhelmine Friederike Bretzmann Burmeister. He was married to Edna Grace Rand Schmidt.
Burmeister entered the service on April 29, 1918, at Windom and was sent to Camp Dodge, Iowa. He served in Battery E, 345th Field Artillery Battalion, 90th Division, as a Private during World War I. Shortly after landing in France, he was taken sick with influenza/pneumonia and died on September 6, 1918. He was buried with military honors in the American cemetery at Le Courneau (camp of) Gironde, France and later transferred to Jeffers Cemetery, Jeffers, Cottonwood County, Minnesota, USA.
