William Jewell Whyte was born on October 25, 1897, in Illinois. He was the son of George Whyte and Laura Haas Whyte. He attended Danville High School and the University of Chicago, graduating in 1919. He joined the American Field Service in April 1917, served in Transport Section 526, and later enlisted in French Aviation, training at Avord and Pau.

He served in the 20th Aero Squadron as a Cadet during World War I. Whyte died in a plane accident on March 20, 1918, near Bordeaux, during his aviation training when his aircraft fell from 6,000 feet. He was buried in Bordeaux and later reinterred at Suresnes American Cemetery in France. His death was marked by the University of Chicago lowering its flag to half-mast.
