Kenton I. Carris was born on July 29, 1909, in Springville, Linn County, Iowa. He was the son of Vernon Webster Carris and Maye Bertie Crew Carris. He was married to Kathryn Allene Carris.

Carris graduated from Moline High School and Augustana College. He entered the service on January 1, 1941. He served in the Headquarters, 12th Army Group, as a Lieutenant Colonel during World War II. On August 2, 1944, proceeding away from an area where German troops were active, he encountered a party of American naval officers who found it necessary to continue in the direction from which he had just some. He volunteered to assist them through the area and personally led the group forward. In so doing, he was struck by enemy fire and killed. He was Killed in Action on August 2, 1944, during the liberation of Dol-de-Bretagne. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart. He was buried at Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, Colleville-sur-Mer, Departement du Calvados, Basse-Normandie, France.
