Henry Vernon Haynes was born on August 14, 1917, in Hardin County, Tennessee. He was the son of Olen Alexander Haynes and Lella P. Howard Haynes.

He served in the 17th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, as a Technician Fifth Grade during World War II. He was a member of an armored car M-8 crew. He was the driver when their Armored Car was destroyed by a German antitank gun in the hamlet of Les Rolandières, in the town of Dol-de-Bretagne, Brittany, France. He was Killed in Action on August 3, 1944, during the liberation of Dol-de-Bretagne. He was awarded the Purple Heart and was buried at Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Departement de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
