Joseph Francis Sawicki Jr. was born on May 19, 1923, in Bridgeport, Fairfield County, Connecticut. He was married to Adele Sawicki.

He served in the 505th Fighter Squadron, 339th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. On June 8, 1944, 2Lt Sawicki took off from airfield Station 378 in Fowlmere, Cambridgeshire, England, on a mission to Rennes, France. Hit by flak at 17h30, his plane, P-51 Mustang # 42-106653, crashed in the commune of Princé, France. 2Lt Sawicki was Killed in Action. He was buried at Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Departement de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France, and was awarded the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster.
