Ira L. Cornell was born on January 18, 1918, in Stoughton, Dane County, Wisconsin. He was the son of Ira Leroy Cornell and Anna H. Cornell. He was the husband of Mabel Teressa Nygaard Brattlie.
Cornell graduated from Stoughton High School in 1935., and attended Madison College. He operated the Utica store until his induction in June 1943. He served in Company A, 167th Engineer Combat Battalion, as a Technician Fifth Grade during World War II. T5 Cornell was Killed in Action on August 21, 1944, during the liberation of Bellegarde in France. He was initially buried in Brittany American Cemetery, and now was buried at Roselawn Memorial Park, Monona, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA. T5 Cornell was awarded the Purple Heart.
