Dorothy Levitsky was born on April 17, 1917, in Woodstown, New Jersey, to Isidor and Fanny (Freihon) Levitsky. She attended Salem High School, where she graduated in 1936. Dorothy then pursued nursing, studying at Wilmington Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Pennsylvania.
Dorothy served as a U.S. Army nurse alongside her sister Ellan in La Haye du Puits, Normandy, France, during World War II. Dorothy was assigned to the 164th General Hospital, which was established in the town to treat wounded soldiers. She worked as a ward nurse, caring for those injured in the intense battles following the D-Day landings. She had attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.
After the war, Dorothy worked at the VA Hospital in Elsmere, Delaware, where she served for 28 years before retiring. Seven decades later, Dorothy was awarded the French Legion of Honor medal, the highest distinction for service in France, recognizing her contributions during World War II. On March 30, 1985, Dorothy married Major George Washington Sinner. He preceded her in death in 2003.
Dorothy Levitsky Sinner passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2015, at the age of 98, at Milford Memorial Hospital, Bayhealth Medical Center, in Milford, Delaware. She is now buried in the Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover, Kent County, Delaware, USA.
