Ellan was born on December 27, 1919, in Woodstown, NJ the daughter of the late Isidor and Fanny (Freihon) Levitsky. She went to Salem High School and graduated in 1937. She attended Northeastern Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, PA, and graduated in 1941. Ellan served as a U.S. Army nurse alongside her sister Dorothy in La Haye du Puits, Normandy, France, during World War II. She was assigned to the 164th General Hospital, where she worked in the operating room, providing critical medical care to soldiers injured in the aftermath of the D-Day landings. Ellan's role was vital in the surgical units, where she helped save countless lives during one of the most intense periods of the war. Her contributions were part of the broader Allied effort to establish medical facilities close to the front lines to manage the heavy casualties. She had attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Following the war, Ellan worked at Milford Memorial Hospital for 20 years, as a private nurse. Ellan was awarded the French Legion of Honor medal, which is the highest distinction for service in France. She married Benjamin Orkin on November 11, 1946. He preceded her in death in 1995. Ellan Joyce Levitsky Orkin died on November 20, 2019, and is now buried in the Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover, Kent County, Delaware, USA.
