George Mark Van Ryn was born on February 23, 1918, in Walcott, Rice County, Minnesota. He was married to Bonnie Van Ryn. He enlisted in the service on June 13, 1942. George served in the 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was Killed in Action on June 20, 1944, during the liberation of Teurthéville-Hague. PFC Van Ryn is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, Colleville-sur-Mer, Departement du Calvados, Basse-Normandie, France. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart in recognition of his bravery and sacrifices.
