Robert Joseph Sarvis was born on July 4, 1917, in Sarnia, Lambton County, Ontario, Canada. He was the son of Charles Fremont Sarvis and Josephine Abraham Sarvis. He was the husband of Juanita Hindman Meador. Robert enlisted in the Royal Air Force in April 1942 and then transferred to the US Army Air Force in December 1943. He was assigned to the RAF in May 1944. He served in the 12th Replacement Depot as a Flight Officer during World War II.

The Avro Lancaster PB265 UL-V2 aircraft took off at 9:08 p.m. on July 24, 1944, from Elsham would, Lincolnshire UK, for a mission in Stuttgart, Germany. During the flight, it was damaged a first time by a German fighter, then a second time by the unfortunate fire of the American anti-aircraft fire. The six members of the crew had evacuated by parachute, Robert Sarvis remained at the controls and was Killed in Action in the crash in the town of Carquebut. The aircraft crashed and burned The wreckage was only pulled out in 1990 with the help of a crane. F/O Sarvis is now buried in the Normandy, American Cemetery and Memorial, Colleville-sur-Mer, Departement du Calvados, Basse-Normandie, France. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster.
