Ralph Jackson Yates was born on February 4, 1916. He was the son of George Lee Yates and Bertha Mazelle McClellan Yates. He was the husband of Marian Francis Pfrimmer Yates. Captain Ralph was the commander of L Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division during World War II. He led his unit in several key battles, including the liberation of Vy-lès-Lure on September 16, 1944. Yates was recognized for his leadership in repelling a significantly larger enemy force during this operation. He died on October 17, 1944, and is now buried in the Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery and Mausoleum, Pflugerville, Travis County, Texas, USA. He was awarded the Silver Star.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Ralph J. Yates, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in France, in 15 September 1944. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
