Samuel Alexander Dougherty was born on October 8, 1924, in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. He was the son of Frank Marion Dougherty and Cora Penelope Alexander Dougherty. He served in the 512th Fighter Squadron, 406th Fighter Group, as a Lieutenant during World War II.
On September 27, 1944, Lt Dougherty took off from A-80 Mourmelon-le-Grand airfield on the P-47D-20-RE Thunderbolt (#42-76500) embarking on an armed reconnaissance mission near Strasbourg. While strafing a German ammunition train near Zittersheim at approximately 4:30 p.m., the train exploded, causing his aircraft to crash. Dougherty managed to evacuate the plane by parachute just before impact but tragically did not survive. He is now buried in the Restland Memorial Park, Dallas, Dallas County, Texas, USA.
