John William Drummond was born on September 29, 1919, in Ninety Six, Greenwood County, South Carolina. He was the son of James William Drummond and Fannie Mae Smith Drummond. He was married to Josephine Holloway "Holly" Self Drummond.

During World War II, Drummond was a captain, piloting a P-47D Thunderbolt for the 405th Fighter Group. His aircraft was shot down in 1944 near Giéville, France, leading to his capture. For his bravery, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, two Purple Hearts, nine Air Medals, and three Battle Stars.

After the war, Drummond established Drummond Oil, an oil distribution business, and entered politics. In the Senate, he held various leadership roles, including President Pro Tempore (1996–2001) and committee chairman positions in ethics and finance. He was instrumental in efforts to remove the Confederate Flag from the South Carolina State House grounds. Drummond retired in 2008 and passed away on September 3, 2016. He is now buried in the Elmwood Cemetery, Ninety Six, Greenwood County, South Carolina, USA.
