Alfred Thomsen was born on December 4, 1897, in Hastings, Adams County, Nebraska. He was the son of Niels Sorensen Thomsen and Dagmar Knudsen Thomsen. He was married to Nelle Lonergan Thomsen.

Thomsen served in both World Wars and was a member of the Nebraska National Guard. Before being mobilized for Federal Service in 1940, he worked for Union Pacific. As a Lieutenant Colonel, Thomsen served as a Personnel Officer and later commanded the 3rd Battalion, 134th Infantry Regiment. He led his battalion in the Battle of St-Lô during World War II.

On July 30, 1944, LTC Thomsen sustained fatal injuries when a German artillery shell exploded above his command post. He was evacuated to England, where he passed away 16 days later in a military hospital on August 16, 1944. LTC Thomsen is now buried in the Westlawn-Hillcrest Memorial Park, Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, USA.
