Raymond Valentine Mankowski was born on February 14, 1923, in Lemont, Cook County, Illinois. He was the son of Bronislaus Mankowski and Stella G. Luczak Mankowski.

Raymond served in the 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 9, 1944, during the liberation of Vire, France. PFC Mankowski is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Departement de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
