William Goodrich Niven was born on November 12, 1911, in Norfolk City, Virginia. He was the son of William Glentworth Niven and Frances Griselda "Fannie" Blassingham Niven.

William served in the 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 7, 1944, during the liberation of Vire, France. PFC Niven is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Departement de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
