Alfred Hassell Surrency was born on July 10, 1925, in Sarasota, Sarasota County, Florida. He was the son of Winder Hillman Surrency and Willie Esther Hassell Surrency. He entered the service in December 1943.

Alfred served in the 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, as a Private during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 7, 1944, during the liberation of Vire, France. Pvt Surrency is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Departement de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
