Virgil Willis Olson was born on 6 October 1912 in Concord, Dixon County, Nebraska. He was the son of Henry Jonas Olson and Anna Amelia Rosette Johnson Olson.

Virgil served in the 71st Eagle Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve during World War II. His plane crashed five miles southeast of Ramsgate, England, as a result of aerial engagement. The body of P/O Olson washed ashore on 14 September 1941 and was buried in Flushing Cemetery, The Netherlands.
