George Austin Feathers was born on January 14, 1924, in Queen, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Archie Quitman Feathers and Christina Bertha "Mayme" Claar Feathers. He served in the 603rd Bomber Squadron, 398th Bomb Group, Heavy, as a Sergeant and Top Turret Gunner of B-17 #42-107186 during World War II.

On August 4, 1944, during a mission targeting Peenemünde, Germany, the aircraft was struck by enemy anti-aircraft fire (flak) and crashed near Fresendorf Beach, close to Greifswald, Germany. All nine crew members aboard were killed in action.

Sgt Feathers is now buried in the Ardennes American Cemetery and Memorial, Neuville-en-Condroz, Arrondissement de Liège, Liège, Belgium. He also has a cenotaph in the Upper Claar Cemetery, Queen, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, USA. George A. Feathers' name is inscribed on the Anstey Window Memorial in Panel 3 (right), on Butterfly 22, in the top left wing (section A).
