Donald E. Burns was born on March 14, 1924, in Pushmataha County, Oklahoma. He was the son of Fred Allen Burns and Mabel Edith Orr McLaughlin. He served in the 527th Fighter Squadron, 86th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot of P-47D Thunderbolt #42-26678 during World War II. On August 19, 1944, 2nd Lt. Donald E. Burns was Killed in Action when his P-47D Thunderbolt was brought down by enemy flak during a reconnaissance mission over Avignon. He had taken off from Poretta Airfield in Corsica, and his aircraft crashed near Plan-d'Orgon, located southwest of Cavaillon in southern France.
