John Symon MacArthur was born on March 10, 1918, in New Haven County, Connecticut. He was the son of Elizabeth J. MacArthur. He served in the 603rd Bomber Squadron, 398th Bomb Group, Heavy, as a First Lieutenant and Pilot of B-17 #42-107186 during World War II.
On August 4, 1944, during a mission targeting Peenemünde, Germany, the aircraft was struck by enemy anti-aircraft fire (flak) and crashed near Fresendorf Beach, close to Greifswald, Germany. All nine crew members aboard were killed in action.
1Lt MacArthur is now buried in the Ardennes American Cemetery and Memorial, Neuville-en-Condroz, Arrondissement de Liège, Liège, Belgium. John S. MacArthur's name is inscribed on the Anstey Window Memorial in Panel 1 (left), on Butterfly 1, in the top right wing (section B).
