Paul Anthony Nachtwey was born on November 16, 1916, in Saskatchewan, Canada. He was the son of Peter P. Nachtwey and Edith Marie Wood Nachtwey. He was married to Thais Norris. He worked in the Rochester Gas & Electric Corporation before enlisting in the service on November 6, 1942. He served in the 602nd Bomber Squadron, 398th Bomb Group, as a Second Lieutenant and Navigator of B-17 #42-107188 nicknamed ''Ramp Rooster'' during World War II.

On December 29, 1944, the aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire, causing engine failure and forcing it to crash near the Belgium-Luxembourg border during the Battle of the Bulge. Of the ten crew members, six were captured and became POWs, three evaded capture, and one was killed in action.

2Lt Nachtwey was Killed in Action and is now buried in the Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery, Monroe, Ouachita Parish, Louisiana, USA. Paul A. Nachtwey's name is inscribed on the Anstey Window Memorial in Panel 2 (center), on Butterfly 6, in the top right wing (section B).
