John Douglass Sauer was born on July 13, 1924, in Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, California. He was the son of Florian John "Jack" Sauer and Mary Ella Thorne Sauer. He served in the 603rd Bomber Squadron, 398th Bomb Group, Heavy, as a Second Lieutenant and Bombardier of a B-17 Flying Fortress during World War II.

2Lt Sauer was Killed in Action in 1944, when his aircraft was hit by flak over the target area, with his death occurring inside the plane. He is now buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, Los Angeles County, California, USA. John D. Sauer's name is inscribed on the Anstey Window Memorial in Panel 3 (right), on Butterfly 23, in the top right wing (section B).
