William Marvin Scales Jr. was born on June 3, 1919, in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. He was the son of William M. Scales. He was married to Dorothy Allyn Mikkelson Scales Moshier. He served in the 601st Bomber Squadron, 398th Bomb Group, Heavy, as a Second Lieutenant and Bombardier of B-17 #43-38121 nicknamed ''Queenie'' during World War II.
2Lt Scales died from anoxia while on a bombing mission on December 24, 1944, over Germany. He is now buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial, Coton, South Cambridgeshire District, Cambridgeshire, England. William M. Scales' name is inscribed on the Anstey Window Memorial in Panel 2 (center), on Butterfly 19, in the bottom right wing (section D).
